Formula and intuition

percent = (X ÷ Y) × 100. If X is 25 and Y is 200, then 25/200 = 0.125, times 100 = 12.5%. You are measuring X as a share of Y.

Always keep Y as the reference whole. Swapping X and Y flips the story: 200 is 800% of 25, which is valid math but usually not the question you meant.

Grades, ratios, and stats

Test scores are reverse percentages: points earned ÷ points possible. Conversion rates, win rates, and “what share of traffic came from search” use the same pattern.

If the whole can be zero, the percent is undefined. The calculator will not invent a number when division by zero would occur.
