Understanding vat / tax
VAT and sales-tax tools either add tax to a net price or extract tax from a gross (tax-inclusive) price. The algebra is simple; the rate you choose must match your jurisdiction.

Add versus extract
Add: gross = net × (1 + rate/100). Extract: net = gross ÷ (1 + rate/100), VAT = gross − net. Mixing the directions is a frequent invoicing error.
Presets (such as common European rates) are shortcuts only. Reduced rates, exemptions, and place-of-supply rules can change what you owe — confirm with official guidance or an accountant.
Invoices and receipts
If a receipt shows a tax-inclusive total, use extract mode to see the pre-tax base. If you priced a service ex-VAT, use add mode before billing a client who expects a gross total.
Not a filing substitute
This calculator does not submit returns, handle OSS/IOSS, or decide reverse-charge treatment. It is an arithmetic helper for education and quick checks.
