The formula in plain English

Convert the percent to a fraction of 100, then multiply. Written out: result = (X ÷ 100) × Y. So 15% of 200 is 0.15 × 200 = 30. You are carving out X hundredths of Y.

Decimals and whole percents both work: 7.5% of 80 is 0.075 × 80 = 6. Negative bases are rare in everyday life but follow the same arithmetic if your scenario needs them.

Mental shortcuts that actually help

Find 10% first (shift the decimal one place). Then build: 5% is half of 10%, 20% is double 10%, 15% is 10% + 5%, 25% is a quarter. For 1%, shift two places (1% of 250 = 2.5).

These shortcuts will not replace a calculator for messy decimals, but they catch mistakes when a receipt or spreadsheet looks off.

Where people get stuck

Do not add percentages of different bases as if they share a denominator. Also remember that “% of” is not the same as “percentage points.” This page only answers percent-of questions; for growth from A to B, use percentage change.
